I have been a maker of things all my life…

FROM THIS
TO THIS

I was a metalsmith, jeweler, and instructor of metalsmithing at Northwestern Michigan College for 24 years. I retired a few years ago and wished upon a star that my metals studio would turn into a fiber and dyeing studio. Sure enough, over two years I did just that.
I have been dyeing silk scarves and fabricating cashmere hats, making costumes for my community playhouse, and assembling occasional pieces of artwork that I call A Memoir of Sorts.
When I was working metals, a piece could take days or weeks to complete. There was constant precision. With dyeing, I can dye a scarf in a day. I am free and spontaneous, and there is magic in the process that I have no control over.
The hats allow a different kind of freedom when I create a ‘fascinator.’ I repurpose the luxurious cashmere of gently worn and loved sweaters.
It was my son who suggested that I put my scarves and hats on a website when I said, “I can only own so many scarves!” So, with his help in website management here I am. I hope you like what you see.
I work with 100% silk chiffon, a 63% silk-27% wool blend, and 100% cashmere. The chiffon is the essence of silk. It is sheer, almost transparent, and it drapes with a soft elegance. The silk/wool blend is also very soft and is perfect in cooler temperatures. Each scarf is a color-toned accessory for most outfits, for any occasion, in any season.
Most of the scarves seen here are purchased from the Dharma Trading Co. They are sized at 15” X 60”, but after a scarf is washed several times during the dying process the finished size, ironed, may be off by 1-2 inches in either direction.
Sometimes I purchase the silk chiffon by the yard and custom cut scarves wider or longer. These have machined edges with silk thread. If you would like to custom order a special size, message me with your email/phone so we can have a conversation.
The cashmere hats are made from re-purposed, gently-worn, 100% 2-ply cashmere sweaters. I piece the hats together from a combination of colors and or patterns. On many hats I add a ‘fascinator’ that may include beads or bits left from my days as a jeweler.Should you decide that you want a scarf like one that is sold, please understand that I can never duplicate any scarf. I can take suggestion from the one you like and make a cousin, maybe a distant one, at that. I am always game to try.
The hats began last winter when I realized that I had about 25 lovely cashmere sweaters that I hadn’t worn in years. What if I cut them up and pieced together different colors into hats, I thought. So I began. Some are basic caps and some are embellished with ‘fascinators’. I’ve even been asked to make a ‘memorial’ hat from the sweaters of a dearly departed for a loved one. I have made hats from Mom or Dad’s sweaters for grandchildren and adult children.
Care of scarves and hats
If you must wash a scarf or hat use only cold water and a gentle soap, like Woolite or Dawn. Don’t soak it, gently swish it about a few times and then rinse in cold water. Squeeze out in a towel and iron dry the scarf. Don’t be afraid to stretch the silk some. The hats should be stuffed with a clean hand towel and allowed to air dry.
Special Orders
I cannot ‘duplicate’ a scarf that is marked sold. At best, I can make a cousin, but not a twin. I will do my best to match the color and intensity of the item number that you like. The process is such that the colors may be slightly different then the original.
My scarves make beautiful gifts for a special someone in your life. If you know their favorite color(s) I am happy to do something custom for you. This could take up to 2 weeks to ship. Often, I am able to give you a choice of two. I will send photos for your selection.
Hats always depend on what pieces of cashmere I have left. I am happy to work with your cashmere sweaters as long as they are clean. A small moth hole is not a problem. I charge $60 for a basic cap and $30-$40 if you want a ‘fascinator’.
